A memory of a most hated garment was sent to me. This person was placed in care as a child and whenever he or another child was naughty or caught fighting or even just if he was crying, he was made to wear a strait jacket until he had calmed down. They recall that a lesser punishment was being locked in the laundry cupboard with the light off.
Images that follow are samples from my sketch book and the finished jacket. Handmade with excerpts of the memory screenprinted onto the fabric. Other parts of the text are secreted in the lining and stitiching of the jacket.

great visual images – saddening mental ones – I often think how quick we are to make snap judgements of people when we meet/see them, and how everyone has some hidden story that if you but knew it, would put that person if a different light for you thereafter.
Keep up the blogging
What a powerful piece. The presentation is deceptively bright and clean, but the reality is heart-wrenching.
I am very glad to have found your site– your work is insightful and inspiring.
This is fabulous.
I must admit, I always thought that strait jackets were only used to restrain the mentally ill. Guess I was wrong
